Peer Health Exchange

About

Peer Health Exchange was founded in 2003 in New York City. The inaugural workshops took place in 2004.

Last year, in New York City, 85,000 public school students dropped out of school by 12th grade. The largest cited reason by young women is unintended pregnancy. The NYC Department of Education recommends that students receive a semester of health education in 9th or 10th grade, however, many New York City students are not receiving the right information at the right time. 45% of NYC DOE students (over 40,000 9th graders) do not receive any health education until their junior or senior year. By this time, many students have experienced a health crisis, such as non-consensual sexual activity, substance abuse, or experiencing mental health problems. Some have already dropped out.

Today, New York City is still our largest site, reaching thousands of young people in all five boroughs. During the 2017-2018 school year, 80% the students in PHE NYC partner high schools received free or reduced lunch and 94% identified as people of color.
